Media coverage is making young people feel they are all seen as ‘bad’ by a fearful community. Marginalising young people, while ignoring the complexities of their lives, won’t solve these issues.
We have interviewed more than 80 young people since the start of the pandemic, in an effort to better understand the concerns of many disengaged, marginalised and disadvantaged young people.
The study revealed a link between youth, troubled behaviour and a lack of access to recreational spaces in marginalised communities.
Findings show that in the face of marginalisation and social exclusion, youth in gangs think that they have no options except violence to prove that they are ‘real’ men in their communities.
