- Dean Faculty of Sciences and Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Stellenbosch University
Burtram C. Fielding is a South African molecular biologist who has studied human coronaviruses since 2003. He first mapped key features of SARS-CoV as a research fellow at Singapore’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (2003–06), then led the Molecular Biology and Virology Research Laboratory and served as Dean of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape. In April 2024 he became Dean of Science at Stellenbosch University. His current work probes how coronavirus envelope proteins drive disease and post-viral syndromes. Fielding also engages regularly with the media and the public to unpack new scientific findings in plain language.
