How to clean up space debris – using game theory
We need to find a way to break through the potentially disastrous stalemate wherever everyone waits for someone else to clear up the junk in orbit.
Primary Results
Thousands of satellites are due to burn up in the atmosphere every year – damaging the ozone layer and changing the climate
The number of satellites is exploding, and we still don’t have a fully safe way to dispose of them.
A 4G network on the Moon is bad news for radio astronomy
Radio telescopes are incredibly sensitive to phone network interference.
Energy burst from most distant known galaxy might have been a satellite orbiting Earth
Did we observe the most distant gamma ray burst yet seen, or was it something closer to home?
Part of a rocket crashed into the Moon – why this could threaten future lunar bases
The rocket section struck the lunar surface near Einstein crater on the Moon’s near side.
Ukraine war: how it could play out in space – with potentially dangerous consequences
From harming satellites to crashing the ISS, the Ukraine war could soon extend to space.
Tiangong: China may gain a monopoly on space stations ‑ here’s what to expect
China’s leading role in the new space race could have a positive effect on geopolitics and science alike.
13,000 tonnes of space junk clutters Earth orbit. Here’s how it could be cleaned up
Properly addressing the problem of space requires work across three fronts: technology, policy and philosophy.
Earth has many objects in orbit but definitely only one Moon – despite what some people think
Despite the distances involved, people as far apart as the UK and Australia can see the Moon at the same time.
Amateur astronomers say Chinese space station could crash to Earth – are they right?
We should welcome the fact that amateur astronomers are increasingly keeping tabs on what’s going on up above.
