Recalling multiplication facts doesn’t automatically help children to apply their knowledge.
Multiplication facts typically describe the answers to multiplication sums up to 10x10. They are called “facts” as it is expected they can be easily and quickly recalled.
Mathematics is not a “neutral” subject — cultural biases exist. A shift to more equitable teaching looks like teachers drawing on students’ knowledge, and students generating lots of solutions.
The proposed maths curriculum would result in a deeper understanding of key concepts. It expects students to explain their maths reasoning rather than present their answer without justification.
To multiply two numbers by hand take a few steps but it’s something we’re taught in school. When dealing with big numbers, really big numbers, we need to a quicker way to do things.
Parents can teach very young children to “skip count” at the kitchen table, and it will set them up to be successful math learners throughout their secondary and post-secondary education.
