I specialise in understanding the flow of water, carbon, nutrients and other elements through terrestrial ecosystems, including losses via hydrologic processes and impacts in aquatic systems. I have particular interest in providing New Zealand with access to challenging isotope techniques combined with the ‘big-picture’ understanding required to apply them to the nation’s most important environmental issues. This involves sophisticated instrumental techniques, yet the most crucial understanding often evolves from large scale environmental monitoring and economic activity data, viewed in an economic, social and cultural context. I am focused on the ongoing development of these tools to enable innovative approaches to water management that create flexibility and efficiency beyond what conventional environmental regulation offers. I have a strong interest in developing and using “data science”, management, and leadership techniques to build on my existing expertise to improve the integrated scientific architecture available to address global change issues, including climate change, sustainable agriculture, and water quality.
