With extensive experience in both academic and commercial research, Dr. Simon Thomas is a consultant fisheries, marine ecologist and visiting fellow at the University of Plymouth, who has also spent many years as a commercial and recreational fisherman.

This blend of scientific expertise and practical fishing knowledge enables him to collaborate effectively with professionals across the fishing sector to tackle complex ecological and fisheries‑management questions. He has worked closely with fishermen to generate high‑quality data for data‑poor species such as blue shark, porbeagle, pollack and octopus; work that has contributed to major scientific bodies including ICCAT and ICES and inspired collaborative models now used across the UK. His approach combines strong foundations in marine ecology, chemistry and biology with advanced statistical and modelling skills to transform raw information into insights that support management decisions.

Driven by a pragmatic vision for sustainable marine management, he believes that partnering with fishermen and anglers is essential for achieving ecosystem‑based fisheries management in resource‑limited environments. His dual background allows him to bridge the gap between science and fishing communities, sharing knowledge openly and valuing the expertise of those who work on the water every day.
