As a biogeochemist and environmental scientist with over two decades of research expertise, Dr. Sergiy Medinets specializes in nutrient biogeochemistry, soil-atmosphere interactions and environmental chemistry. His career has focused on advancing nutrient management, reactive trace and greenhouse gas fluxes and understanding human impacts on ecosystems. He has contributed to over 18 national and international research initiatives, driving environmental solutions.

He has been involved in many international and national research projects, as well as co-led and led some of them (see https://www.linkedin.com/in/sergiy-medinets/).

Dr. Medinets has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=36161375000). He developed novel methodologies for measuring soil NOx, N2O, VOC and other trace gases, improving understanding of nutrient fluxes. He also co-authored international guidelines, including sustainable N management, and contributed to the International N Assessment as a coordinating lead author for Eastern Europe.

His technical expertise includes field and lab measurements of greenhouse gases (N2O, CH4, CO2), reactive N compounds (NOx, NH3) and VOCs using technologies like EC, CRDS, PTR-ToF-MS, dynamic and static chamber systems. He has designed and managed long-term research stations, including the first CO2, Nr and GHG flux measurements in Ukraine under the EU NitroEurope and ECLAIRE projects. He also has experience in atmospheric deposition sampling, nutrient footprint analysis and advanced data processing.

Sergiy earned a PhD (Dr. rer. Nat.) in Natural Sciences from the University of Freiburg (Germany) with research conducted at the IMK-IFU, KIT (Germany) on soil NOx fluxes from forest and agricultural ecosystems as part of the EU FP7 ECLAIRE project. He was awarded the British Academy (BA) RaR Fellowship to conduct research at the UKCEH, advancing VOC and nutrient pollution research. Currently he is a senior biogeochemist in the Atmosphere-Biosphere Interactions group at UKCEH (Edinburgh).

He is skilled in engaging stakeholders, including academic institutions, government bodies and international organizations, to translate research into actionable policy recommendations.
