Neville is a Distinguished Professor at Swinburne University of Technology and a Senior Scientist in the Physical Activity Laboratory at the Baker & Diabetes Institute (Australia). Neville's research addresses the environmental drivers and biological consequences of sedentary behaviour – too much sitting as distinct from too little exercise – with implications for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. His studies cover experimental trials in the Baker Institute laboratories, Finland and the USA to better understand the underlying biology of too much sitting, the real-world feasibility and benefits of changing sitting in workplaces and domestic environments, and large-scale observational studies in Australia and Japan on the attributes of urban environments that can reduce physical activity and increase sitting time. He has published some 700 peer-reviewed papers and chapters, has some 130,000 citations of his work, and his Google Scholar H-index is 166.
