Matthew Powers is Professor in the Department of Communication, where he also co-directs the Center for Journalism, Media and Democracy. His research and teaching explore transformations in media careers, usually from a comparative perspective, and their societal implications. Currently, he is studying – with colleagues at the University of Washington – the feminization of statehouse reporting in the United States.

Powers received his Ph.D. in Media, Culture and Communication from New York University. Previously, he worked as a journalist at the Burlington Free Press in Vermont.
