Martin Butler

Martin Butler is a Professor of Management Practice at Vlerick Business School in Belgium. He holds an Electronic Engineering degree from the University of Pretoria, an MBA (Cum Laude) and a PhD from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Martin facilitates learning and consults on all digital and project management-related matters. He is particularly interested in applied AI, digital transformation portfolios, aligning digital investments with strategic intent and digital resilience.
Martin’s 15-year career in the IT industry started as a software developer and includes business analysis, project- and program management and IT consulting experience. He provided consultancy services and successfully led global project teams at Computer Associates, Denel, Engen, JP Morgan, KBC Bank, MCB and Soulco.
Martin joined academia and eventually headed Stellenbosch Business School’s Teaching and Learning portfolio of 13 postgraduate programmes. Before that, he was the MBA program director, a period culminating in several recognitions and achievements, including strong growth in international rankings and full international re-accreditations. He facilitated on graduate, postgraduate and executive education programs in Africa, Asia and Europe and holds an Extraordinary Professor appointment at Stellenbosch University, and visiting Professor appointments at the American University of Cairo and the University of Galway.
Martin’s research interests include AI, business and IT alignment, digital resilience, and project portfolio management. As a management educator, he researches the application of technology in education and has published more than 15 articles in local and international accredited journals and conference proceedings. In addition, he frequently appears in the technology and business media and has presented papers at various practitioner and academic conferences.
