I am Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the University of Plymouth, where I lead the Biogeochemistry Research Centre. My research has focused on the cycling of nitrogen in both terrestrial and aquatic systems. Nitrogen has been described as 'the wicked element', as it exists in so many different forms; the characteristics that make it essential to organisms also create complex challenges as we add more and more reactive nitrogen to the environment.
