- Professor Emeritus, University of Oregon
As an emeritus professor, I am active at the University of Oregon and in professional associations. Throughout my career, I have been interested in personal and social transformation, collective behavior, gender, and minority religions.
I have written books and articles about a variety of alternative spiritual movements, including the Rajneesh/Osho Movement, the Jesus People f he 1970s, the Human Potential Movement, and Landmark Seminars. My current research further explores the personal and political dynamics of religious innovation.
In The Spiritual Virtuoso: Personal Faith and Social Transformation, my co-author Steven Pfaff and I explore spiritual virtuosity and the consequential religious movements that made a lasting impact from the Reformation, to the Antislavery Movement, to the Human Potential Movement and beyond.
