Kate is a community and ecosystem ecologist interested in how biotic systems are structured, maintained and how they respond to disturbances. Much of her work currently focuses on quantifying the role of fauna in ecosystem functioning with a focus on social insects.
She conducts research in a range of environments, but mostly in the tropics and sub-tropics, from montane grasslands, to rainforests, to savannas.
