- PhD Candidate in Latin American Studies, University of Liverpool
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Liverpool, researching transitional justice and gender in Guatemala. In 2016 I observed the Sepur Zarco trial prosecuting wartime domestic and sexual slavery committed at a Guatemalan military base, against Maya Q'eqchi women. I also conducted fieldwork with the three organizations supporting the women survivors, between 2016-2017. My research examines what the trial means for the women survivors, what it means for the organizations, and whether the women survivors and organizations can achieve their goals in seeking justice and broader social change by prosecuting these crimes in a domestic (Guatemalan) court using international law.
