Dr James Kirkham has been involved in research with the British Antarctic Survey since 2016. His background is in marine geophysics, glaciology, and the high-mountain water cycle.

In an independent role, he also currently serves as the Chief Science Advisor and Coordinator of the Ambition on Melting Ice (AMI) High-level Group on Sea-level Rise and Mountain Water Resources - a coalition of 25 countries affected by the loss of Earth's cryosphere. AMI was founded at the initiative of Chile and Iceland at COP27.
