Dr Ikechukwu Opara is a food systems researcher specialising in postharvest losses and waste, sustainability, and the application of artificial intelligence in fresh-produce value chains to drive policy and decision-making systems. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa.

His academic journey spans Transport and Logistics Management, Sustainable Development, and Food Science. This interdisciplinary foundation underpins his approach in food systems research. He has led several studies, including the quantification of postharvest losses and waste in the South African pomegranate value chain, as well as evaluating infrastructure and operational challenges in a fresh produce wholesale market. More recently, he has pioneered the use of machine learning models to predict food waste in the South African fresh produce wholesale markets, providing insights that guide decision-making, improve supply chain efficiency, and advance sustainability goals.

His publications are increasingly cited in the fields of food security, postharvest technology, and AI in agriculture. With a career vision that bridges science, technology, and policy, he is committed to developing digital tools and evidence-based strategies that contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. His work positions him at the intersection of academic research, industry application, and policy development in sustainable food systems.
