Hung Nguyen-Viet

Dr. Hung Nguyen is Regional Director for International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Asia. He leads the One Health Area of Work under the Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods (SAAF) Science Program of CGIAR. His research focuses on the intersections between agriculture and health, particularly food safety, infectious and zoonotic diseases, and risk assessment and interventions in informal and traditional markets. He applies a One Health approach and is a strong advocate for the operationalization and investment in One Health.

He previously served as Health Program Leader and Regional Representative for East and Southeast Asia at ILRI. He has held key research leadership roles across CGIAR, including as lead of the CGIAR Initiative on One Health, and in the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) Food Safety Flagship and the CGIAR COVID-19 Hub.

He is currently a member of the WHO Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) and of the One Health High-Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP). In 2021, he was appointed as a WHO expert to investigate the origins of SARS-CoV-2 in Wuhan, China.

With over 20 years of experience across Asia, Africa, and Europe, Dr. Nguyen previously worked at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and Sandec/Eawag in Switzerland. He co-founded and led the Center for Public Health and Ecosystem Research (CENPHER) at the Hanoi University of Public Health in Vietnam, and coordinated the regional initiative on Ecohealth field-building in Southeast Asia.
