Formerly a primary school teacher, Darren is now an Associate Professor in Health Education in the Faculty of Arts and Education, University of Auckland | Waipapa Taumata Rau.

His research is primarily focused on the interconnections between public health and public education. This includes research projects on: the ‘war on childhood obesity'; the commercialisation of mental health education; the privatisation and corporatisation of public education; and health and physical education policies and practices. Darren has published a book ('Schools, corporations and the war on childhood obesity: How corporate philanthropy shapes public health and education') and number of articles and chapters about these research topics, and regularly presents at international and national conferences.
