Professor Carolyn Whitzman is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa. She is the Expert Advisor to the Housing Assessment Resource Tools project. She is the author of "How to Home: Fixing Canada's Housing Crisis" (forthcoming from UBC/On Point Press, March 2024), "Clara at the Door with a Revolver: the scandalous Black suspect, the exemplary white son, and the murder that shocked Toronto" (UBC/ On Point Press, 2023), 'Suburb, Slum, Urban Village: Transformations in a Toronto Neighbourhood 1875-2002' (University of British Columbia Press, 2009) and 'The Handbook of Community Safety, Gender, and Violence Prevention: practical planning tools' (Earthscan, 2008), and the co-author of 'Safe Cities: guidelines for planning, design, and management' (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1995), and the lead editor of 'Building Inclusive Cities: Women’s Safety and the Right to the City' (Earthscan, 2013), She has also published numerous peer-reviewed scholarly publications, book chapters, and reports on partnerships for social justice in the city, with particular emphasis on the supporting the rights of women, children and people with disabilities to access affordable housing, public transportation, social services, and public space.
