Carol is a social scientist with qualitative and mixed-method research expertise in reproductive health. She holds an academic Reader post at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) where she is a co-investigator for the Medical Research Council (MRC) Applied Global Health Research Programme, C-Safe (2022-2027). Carol also holds a Senior Research Fellow appointment at the University of Liverpool and an honorary appointment at Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust. Her work spans high, middle and low-resource settings, includes collaborations with the World Health Organisation (WHO), SANDS (the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity), NHS organisations, and service users. Her contributions to women's health and maternity care include evidence syntheses for two WHO Technical Advisory Committees, two Lancet Series, two WHO Guidelines and the WHO ecological framework for understanding drivers of caesarean section use. Carol was awarded the UCLan Faculty of Health and Wellbeing's Research Success Award in 2020 in recognition of the latter. During the COVID-19 pandemic (July 2020-February 2022), she was a co-investigator and UK work-package lead for the UKRI-ESRC funded ASPIRE-COVID-19 study investigating organisational responses to the provision of maternity and neonatal services as the pandemic unfolded.
