Berta Valente is a Portuguese nutritionist, researcher, and advocate forrights-based public health, currently undertaking a PhD in Public Health. Her work integrates community nutrition, public health
research, and international collaboration, with a focus on tackling the structural determinants of health. She is a research fellow in the BRIDGE project, which aims to improve access to primary
healthcare and obesity management in Portugal, with a strong emphasis on addressing weight stigma as well as on other local projects that aim to advance community nutrition through education
and engagement. Her doctoral research, “The weight of
society: a comprehensive approach to socioeconomic inequalities in obesity” (2023.00992.BD), explores the epidemiological, sociological, economic, and gender dimensions of obesity through a
justice- and human rights-informed lens. In parallel to her academic work, Berta is actively engaged in writing and organising events on pressing sociopolitical issues that influence public health and
human rights. Through her work, she advocates for a public health practice rooted in equity, dignity, and collective responsibility.
