Andrew McStay is Professor of Technology & Society at Bangor University and author of Automating Empathy: Decoding Technologies that Gauge Intimate Life (Oxford University Press, 2024, open access). His research focuses on the ethical implications of AI systems that claim to understand or simulate emotion. He directs the Emotional AI Lab and currently leads Responsible AI (RAI) projects on broadening global input into IEEE standards for emulated empathy and human–AI interaction (IEEE P7014.1). Recent work includes a study for the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada on emotional AI in children’s products. He also serves on the UK Information Commissioner’s Office Technology Advisory Panel and Ofcom’s Research, Evidence and Evaluation Working Group.
