I am a Professor of Information Science and the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Alberta. I received my PhD in Information Science from the University of Strathclyde Department of Computer and Information Sciences in Glasgow, Scotland in 2004. I have been teaching, researching, and writing about digital information interaction and retrieval, digital libraries, data and learning analytics, and more recently artificial intelligence and ethics. I was a member of the University of Alberta Provost’s Taskforce on AI and the Learning Environment and am currently co-chairing the AI in Teaching and Learning Sub-committee at the University of Alberta. I chaired the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Schools working group on Generative AI and Graduate & Postdoctoral Research and Supervision. I have been leading several AI literacy education initiatives for the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and have published and presented on AI literacy, academic integrity and generative AI, deep research, and responsible and ethical use of generative AI in Graduate research and writing.
