Professor of Mental Health in the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specialising in the psychological impact of trauma across diverse populations. His research focuses on forced displacement, post-conflict mental health, occupational injury, military and emergency responder well-being, and psychosocial hazards.

Professor Steel has led research programs and developed clinical services for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral injury, and mental health risks among refugees, veterans, and first responders. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, his work has influenced national and international mental health policies, advancing trauma-informed care and evidence-based interventions for high-risk and displaced populations worldwide.
