William Gourlay teaches politics and international relations in the School of Social Sciences and the School of Philosophical and Historical Studies at Monash University. His PhD, completed at Monash University, included research into issues of identity and citizenship amongst Kurds in Turkey. This involved several periods of fieldwork in Diyarbakir and Istanbul, and a period as a visiting scholar at the Centre for Modern Turkish Studies at Istanbul Şehir University. From 2017 until 2021 he was a Research Associate at the Middle East Studies Forum at Deakin University.

He has previously worked as a teacher in Turkey, as a freelance journalist and, from 2001 until 2013, as a commissioning editor for Lonely Planet in Melbourne and London.
