Research in the Burgos lab is focused on the bioremediation and biogeochemistry of organic contaminants, heavy metals and radionuclides. Current research projects examine iron(III) reduction and uranium (VI) reduction related to Department of Energy (link) legacy waste cleanup, and manganese(II) oxidation and low-pH iron(II) oxidation related to coal mine drainage. Research projects typically employ of series of cross-disciplinary and complementary techniques such as electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy for mineralogical characterizations; culture-based enumeration and DNA-based characterization of microbial communities; and, aqueous geochemical measurements for speciation modeling and kinetic analysis.
