Wakithi is a medical doctor who completed his MBChB at the University of Cape Town. His clinical interest in psychiatry has seen him work at various levels of mental health care in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, South Africa. His background prompted a pivot to postgraduate studies in epidemiology and the clinical neurosciences at the University of Oxford, from where his research interest into child and adolescent mental health developed and continues.
