Vivi Tan is a researcher specialising in consumer protection law, contract law, and the impact of technology on how disputes get resolved — particularly online dispute resolution (ODR), the systems increasingly used to settle consumer complaints without ever going to court.

She researches what makes digital justice systems trustworthy and where AI and automation are quietly reshaping consumer rights, contract disputes, and access to justice. Her PhD research at the University of Melbourne is being published as a monograph by Oxford University Press in 2026.

She’s well placed to comment on:

• Consumer rights and contract law rights and obligations
• Online dispute resolution and consumer rights
• Contract law in digital and AI-driven transactions
• AI’s role in legal and judicial processes
• AI chatbots and automated customer service handling consumer complaints
• Algorithmic or AI-driven decision-making in dispute resolution
• Access to justice in digital marketplaces
• The gap between consumer protection law and fast-moving tech
