Vik J. Squires

Dr Vik J. Squires (they/them) is a trans nonbinary, autistic, casual academic at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, The University of Melbourne. In 2025, they received their PhD in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from The University of Melbourne, for conducting research on the history and lived experiences of women and gender diverse performers in metal music. Squires’ recent publications include a chapter on autistic metalheads in Heavy Metal and Disability: Crips, Crowds, and Cacophonies, and a journal article on transness within the Australian metal scene published in Metal Music Studies. They are currently writing the manuscript for their first book on trans Australian metal.
