- Research Fellow, Curtin University
I am a geophysicist and palaeomagnetist at Curtin University's School of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Perth, where I reconstruct the behaviour and strength of Earth's magnetic field across geological time. I completed my PhD in geophysics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich in 2015, and have spent more than fifteen years reading the ancient magnetic field from rocks and sediments, with fieldwork on four continents. Reversals run through much of my work: I have documented individual polarity changes in detail — including the Jaramillo reversal recorded in Armenian lake sediments and the Laschamps excursion in southern Germany — and I routinely use the record of past reversals to date sedimentary sequences. My current research targets the deeper engine behind them, the strength of the Precambrian field and the growth of Earth's inner core. I have published nearly 60 peer-reviewed studies, including in Nature and Science-family journals.
