Dr Tristan Dunning has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Queensland. He is the author of "Hamas, Jihad and Popular Legitimacy: Reinterpreting Resistance in Palestine" published in Routledge's Critical Terrorism Studies Series in February 2016. This book is based on extensive fieldwork in Palestine and the wider Levant. He is also the editor of "Palestine: Past and Present" published in 2019. He has published journal articles in Critical Studies on Terrorism, Terrorism and Political Violence, and Small Wars and Insurgencies, as well as under the auspices of the Australian Parliamentary Library.
He has written numerous short-form pieces for a number of publications including, Fairfax (i.e., The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age etc.), The Conversation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Australian Instititue for International Affairs, The New Arab, and Daily Sabah, among others. He has also made dozens of appearances in the media, including Australian Broadcasting Corporation TV and radio, Sky News Australia, and a variety of other Australian and international media outlets.
Tristan has worked as lecturer at the University of Queensland, the Australian National University, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and the American University of Afghanistan. He has also worked as a visiting lecturer at the University of Duhok in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq in 2013-14 and an-Najah National University in Nablus, Palestine in 2010. He has lived, worked and traveled extensively throughout the Middle East including Palestine, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Qatar, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Israel, and the UAE.
