Professor Cullen has dedicated his life to teaching and learning. He has taught at universities in Asia, Africa, Australia and the Pacific. His areas of expertise include health/ HIV journalism, media ethics and tertiary curriculum development.
He combines three roles within the School of Arts and Humanities (SAH) at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. He is Professor of Journalism, Associate Dean and Director of CREATEC - the School's Research Centre.
Professor Cullen has received several university and national teaching awards. Currently, he is an Australian Learning and Teaching Fellow and the recipient of the Australian Government Award for Excellence in University Teaching.
He has received national and international grants and published more than 40 peer-reviewed book chapters, journal articles and conference papers that have informed his teaching and that of many of his peers.

Professor Cullen came late to academic life. Before gaining a scholarship to undertake a doctoral thesis at Queensland university in the late 90s, he had worked as a missionary, teacher and broadcaster in the UK, Malawi, and Papua New Guinea.
His Degrees include: S.T.B (Hons) Theology; MA. Religious Studies (Leuven University, Belgium); MA. International Journalism (City, London University); PhD. Journalism (University of Queensland).
