While my undergraduate background is in philosophy and mathematics, my interest now lies in lyric poetry. Specifically, in order to display significant continuities between lyric forms, I am preoccupied with constructing certain cross-temporal, cross-cultural comparisons. My doctoral work concerns the perhaps surprising parallels between Petrarch and Walt Whitman, two poets who are formally distinct but who are 'doing' very similar things with the lyric genre. During Summer 2024, I presented a paper on Petrarch and Whitman at Oxford University for the BCLA conference titled "Affiliations." My interest in the lyric extends to popular culture, specifically hip-hop, a culture that often defines itself in terms of "lyricism."
