DR TONY D. SAMPSON is a Reader in Digital Communication at the University of Essex Business School.

His work is structured around two interconnected strands: the first critically analyses digital marketing, social media, net labour, and user experience (UX) within the platform economy; the second applies concepts of emotional geography and mezzo-level engagement to impactful community collaborations around culture, heritage, and natural environments.

Central to both research strands is an examination of how environments evoke, shape, or suppress experience, contributing to critical debates on power, inclusion, and marginalisation.

Digital Scholarship & Media Profile:

Tony is a leading voice in critical digital communications and marketing. His influential publications include the monographs Virality: Contagion Theory in the Age of Networks (University of Minnesota Press, 2012), The Assemblage Brain: Sense Making in Neuroculture (2017), and A Sleepwalker’s Guide to Social Media (Polity, 2020). He has co-edited The Spam Book (with Jussi Parikka, Hampton Press, 2009) and Affect and Social Media (with Darren Ellis and Stephen Maddison, Rowman and Littlefield, 2018).

His forthcoming book, Birth, School, Work, Death: UX and the Struggle Against Lifecycle Optimization (original working title "The Struggle for User Experience"), critiques the colonisation of lifecycles by experiential industries.

Tony's research reaches broad audiences through frequent media commentary, including appearances on the BBC TV News Channel, BBC Radio 4’s Moral Maze, the consumer programme You and Yours, and contributions to CNN, Newsweek, and The Washington Post. He is regularly invited to speak at major international academic conferences and arts institutions, with recent talks at HowTheLightGetsIn Hay, London's Serpentine Galleries and the London School of Economics (LSE).

Civic Engagement & Leadership:

Tony operationalises the university's role as a local anchor institution through applied, community-centred research. He is co-founder of the Cultural Engine Research Group (CERG), which facilitates cross-sector collaboration between academia, local authorities, charities, and communities. Through CERG, he co-organises public initiatives like Club Critical Theory and the Imaginarium. This work directly informs policy as a member of the Key Cities All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), focusing on liveability and sustainable growth in urban centres, seaside towns, and local natural environments.

Funded Projects & Impact:

Tony's recent research is supported by grants focused on tangible community impact:

National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) Project (2022/23): Academic lead for "Emotional Geography" co-creation workshops and manager of student internships to develop a new museum in Tendring.

Key Cities Innovation Network Grant (2025–26): Supporting policy-shaping research bridging local authorities and national parliament.

Innovation Fund (2026): Embedding community-led environmental strategy, festival programming, and biodiversity planning with an Essex District Authority.

Academic Community:

At Essex, Tony is a member of the Centre for Commons Organising, Values Equalities and Resilience (COVER) and serves on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Coastal Communities.

He welcomes prospective PhD students interested in e.g., critical digital studies, critical marketing, the experience economy, affective labour, and community-engaged research linked to emotional geography, arts-nature projects, and mezzo-level theory.
