Tomas Martin Associate Professor in Materials Physics within the School of Physics at the University of Bristol. He is EDF/Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellow in Correlative Microscopy for Nuclear Power, and in 2022 received the inaugural Amazon Physical Science Fellowship. Tomas is Editor-in Chief of the journal Materials Today Communications.

Tomas's research works closely with industry partners to understand how materials change during operation in for nuclear power plants, semiconductor devices and aerospace. He uses advanced microstructural characterisation techniques to characterise the structure and chemistry of materials, and how they change as a result of temperature, stress, irradiation and corrosion. His work takes a holistic approach to materials characterisation that uses a combination of experimental techniques and computer modelling to understand the mechanisms behind materials behaviour.

After obtaining a PhD in physics in 2011, Tomas spent several years as a consultant engineer in the renewables sector and has extensive experience across the energy landscape. In addition to his materials science research Tomas has research projects modelling the future of the electricity grid to better understand how different energy sources will coexist as we move towards a Net Zero energy economy.
