Tom Long is a Professor of International Relations in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick and Profesor Afiliado in the División de Estudios Internacionales at CIDE, Mexico City. Along with Carsten-Andreas Schulz, Tom currently leads to AHRC-funded project "Latin America and the peripheral origins of nineteenth-century international order."
Tom's research examines the dynamics of asymmetrical power relations in international politics, especially in the context of Latin America's historical international relations and the place of small states in world politics. Tom is author of two books: A Small State’s Guide to Influence in World Politics (Oxford University Press, 2022) and Latin America Confronts the United States: Asymmetry and Influence (Cambridge University Press, 2015). He is co-editor of two books on North American regionalism. In addition, Tom has published articles in journals including the American Political Science Review, International Organization, World Politics, International Security, International Affairs, Perspectives on Politics, the Journal of Global History, and Past & Present.
Tom joined the University of Warwick in September 2017. He is on the steering committee for Warwick's Global History and Culture Centre, founding co-director of the Latin America at Warwick Network, and co-director of the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation. In 2018, Tom was Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile. Previously, he taught at the University of Reading, CIDE, and American University. He has a PhD in International Relations from American University.
