Tom Higgs is an honorary researcher at the Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University. He has a background in physics, having completed a PhD at Cambridge on superconducting spintronics, and undergraduate studies at Royal Holloway, University of London.

While continuing to work in physics during the pandemic, Tom became more concerned with working on the challenges to overcome the climate crisis. He had previously followed his interest in sustainable transport to work as a smart mobility engineer. Tom enjoys applying his training in precise yet systemic thinking to carbon accounting and consultancy work.

He is also a consultant at Small World Consulting. His role involves modelling carbon footprints of companies or organisations, including those responsible for large land areas in the UK, and helping them plan for and implement large footprint reductions.

Tom's research interests include long-term societal sustainability, the global food system, and the implications of degrowth on planetary boundaries.
