At the University of Birmingham, I teach the history of the early United States and of the early modern Atlantic world. My first book, Gentlemen Revolutionaries (Princeton, 2017) looked at how a new national elite struggled to assert itself in the critical period between 1781 and 1787. My second, Empire Ablaze (Verso, 2026) sees the American Revolution from the perspective of a transatlantic working class, especially through the eyes of Scottish-born housepainter and revolutionary saboteur James Aitken.
