Professor Tina Uys is a professor of sociology at the University of Johannesburg and a certified clinical sociologist (Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology). She served as Head of the Department of Sociology for 15 years and currently serves on the International Sociological Association’s (ISA) Executive Committee. In 2013, she was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at George Washington University and the University of Cincinnati.
An influential leader in the global sociological community, Prof Uys has held prominent roles, including Vice-President (National Associations) of the ISA, President of ISA’s Research Committees on Clinical Sociology and Social Psychology, and President of the South African Sociological Association (SASA). She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Whistleblowing Canada Research Society, is a Commissioner of the Commission for the Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology (CAPACS) and co-edits the Clinical Sociology Review.
Prof Uys has published over 60 academic works. Her 2022 book Whistleblowing and the Sociological Imagination, published by Palgrave Macmillan, received the ISA’s RC46 Outstanding Scholarly Book Award. She was honoured with SASA’s Lifetime Service Award in 2023 and the AACS Lester F. Ward Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied and Clinical Sociology in 2024. She is rated a B3 researcher (Internationally Recognised) by the South African National Research Foundation.
Prof Uys is widely recognised for her pioneering work in clinical sociology, particularly her scholarship on whistleblowing and institutional integrity. Her career reflects a sustained commitment to intellectual excellence, transformative leadership, and the advancement of socially engaged sociology in South Africa and internationally.
