I completed my PhD in East Asian history at the Australian National University in 2006. Prior to coming to Sydney, I taught Japanese Studies / Japanese History at the National University of Singapore.

My main area of expertise is the history of minority groups in Japan, with a special focus on Burakumin. I have written two monographs that cover both the early modern and modern historical dimensions of these communities. Some of my research also involves a comparative analysis of the experiences of these communities (comparative caste studies) as well as study of the transnational dimensions of their activities. I am also interested in researching and writing histories that meaningfully connect to the study of these communities, including religious/intellectual, material, and animal histories.

Most recently I am also beginning to reexamine the history of development across Asia. I am particularly interested in uncovering histories of premodern development and developmentalism that can help us to think critically and productively about development in modern Asia.
