Thomas M. Pitot

(He/Him/Il/Lui)

I am a postdoctoral researcher in microbiology at the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, where I study the ecological role of viruses in aquatic environments, with a particular focus on polar ecosystems. My research explores how giant viruses shape microbial communities and influence major biogeochemical cycles, especially in rapidly changing Arctic environments. By combining omics approaches and bioinformatics, I aim to better understand the hidden processes that structure ecosystems and regulate the flow of carbon and energy at microscopic scales.
energy at microscopic scales.

I completed my PhD in microbiology at Université Laval, following earlier training in marine biology and oceanography. My work sits at the intersection of environmental microbiology, global change biology and data science, and I am particularly interested in improving how microbiome data are shared and reused within the scientific community. Beyond research, I engage in science communication to highlight the importance of invisible microbial processes and their large-scale impacts on ecosystems and climate.
