Dr. Theodore Christou is a professor at Queen’s University and a leading historian of education whose work bridges the past and present to explore how education shapes democratic societies. Since 2015, he has been cross-appointed to the Department of History, mostly in the area of Byzantine history.
His project In Search of Byzantium -- which integrates the late Roman period into foundational scholarship of educational history -- has received funding from Queen's University, the University of New Brunswick and SSHRC. He was recently a visiting research fellow at Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks in the area of education in Byzantium.
A seasoned academic leader, he previously served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University and as Dean of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at Ontario Tech University. In these roles, Dr. Christou championed innovative approaches to graduate education, fostering research excellence and collaboration across disciplines. Now dedicated to his scholarly and creative pursuits, he continues to inspire students and colleagues through his teaching and mentorship.
An accomplished poet, Dr. Christou’s creative work reflects a deep engagement with history, identity, and the transformative nature of education. Dr. Christou has a distinguished publishing record, including numerous books and peer-reviewed articles that examine the historical and philosophical foundations of education. His work is recognized internationally for its contributions to understanding how educational ideas evolve and influence societies. As a scholar and writer, he remains committed to fostering dialogue about the enduring role of education in creating equitable and just communities.
Dr. Christou is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and the College of Early Childhood Educators.
