Terry Flew is Professor of Digital Communication and Culture in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, The University of Sydney, and an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow.
He is the author of 14 books including Understanding Global Media, Politics, Media and Democracy in Australia, Media Economics, Global Creative Industries, and Regulating Platforms.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA), and a Fellow of the International Communications Association. He was President of the International Communications Association (ICA) from 2019-2020.
He leads the Australian node of the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project (GMICP), a project funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council with participants from 40 countries.
He has been an Executive Board member of the International Communications Association, Australian and New Zealand Communication Association, and International Media Management Academic Association.
In 2011-12, Professor Flew chaired the Australian Law Reform Commission Review of the National Media Classification Scheme. The ALRC's Final Report, Classification - Content Regulation and Convergent Media, was tabled in Federal Parliament in March 2012.
He has served on the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts for Humanities and Creative Arts (HCA) from 2013-15, and was on the Research Evaluation Committee for Humanities and Creative Arts in the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia research evaluation exercise.
He currently holds two Australian Research Council grants, on the future of digital platform regulation and trust and mistrust in news. He is also part of a 40-country research consortium reviewing trends in global media and Internet concentration, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
