- Researcher in Black education, policy, and community development, University of Toronto
Tanitiã Munroe, PhD is a scholar whose work sits at the intersection of education, child and youth care practice, and community development. She holds degrees in Education and in Child and Youth Care Practice, and earned her PhD in Adult Education and Community Development—with a collaborative specialization in Educational Policy—at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto.
Her doctoral dissertation, From Harm to Healing: Mobilizing Black Cultural Capital and Family Advocacy to Advance Black Student Wellbeing in Canadian K–12 Education, contributes to the field of Black Studies in Canada by centering Black families’ advocacy, knowledge, and cultural wealth as transformative forces in education. The study also expands Bourdieu’s theory of capital by advancing a Canadian articulation of Community Cultural Wealth, illustrating how Black families mobilize social networks, grassroots organizing, and intergenerational care to reshape educational policies and practices.
Tanitiã’s broader research critically examines the educational experiences of Black youth and their families across Canada. In the K–12 context, she explores how provincial and school‐level policies shape Black students’ opportunities and outcomes, the ways Black families engage with and navigate schooling, and the often‐overlooked cultural capital that Black women who mother bring to educational spaces. Extending her focus beyond secondary schooling, she also investigates barriers to, and pathways for, post‐secondary access—especially for Black LGBTQIA+ young people.
She has published extensively on Canadian K–12 education policy, the lived experiences of Black students and families in schools, and equity in post‐secondary access. Through both academic and community‐engaged dissemination, she seeks to inform policy and practice that affirm and advance the educational well‐being of Black youth and their communities.
