Tamsin Johnson

(She/Her)

Tamsin is a PhD candidate at Nottingham Trent University. Her present research is situated within Visual Culture and intersects with History and Sports Cultures. Her PhD ''Cycling Women and Visions of Modernity and Femininity in British Visual Culture (1880-1939)'' assesses the changing forms of feminine modernity through the visual representation of cycling women. It aims to contribute to a more developed understanding of women's history and experience and to redress present-day notions that women of the past were immobile.

Tamsin's work studies female identities with previous projects examining differences in representation between the studious 'New Woman' and the glamorous 'Gibson Girl'. Her paper 'Women in the Kitchen: The Performativity of Modern Living' was presented at the 2021 'SPACE Studies: Gender, Space and Architecture' conference. The project examined promotional imagery from the 20th and 21st centuries and debated the concept of work/life balance and gender performance with regards to 'open-plan living'.

Together with industry experience as a buyer in fashion and general merchandise, Tamsin has expertise encompassing fashion and material culture, fashion and identity, feminism, modernity, postmodernity, design/fashion history and popular culture. Ultimately Tamsin is interested in how women are visualised particularly images that denote speed (or lack of), beauty, domesticity, coolness and autonomy.
