My research focuses on literacy and creative practice in everyday life.

Past projects include a British Academy funded ethnographic study of the everyday lives and literacy practices of families living on a Midlands council estate. This research was the focus of an article which won the Wiley-Blackwell Research in Literacy Education Award 2015 and a book, 'Portraits of Everyday Literacy: Reframing the Debate for Families and Communities'.

My recent research has focused on fibre craft as a meaning making practice in everyday life. During my Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2021-2022), I interviewed knitters and crocheters about how their craft allows them to explore and express what matters to them. Through the Knit and Matter project (funded by the British Academy, 2022-2023), I worked with amateur crafters to explore materials and what they mean to makers.
