Stuart Deerness teaches future secondary school teachers at the university level. He leads the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching programme in the School of Education at AUT.
Before becoming a university lecturer, Stuart worked as a secondary school teacher. During this time, he became interested in how power works in schools and society, and how inequality affects students. His research looked at how teachers balance government policies, political trends, and their own values in their work.
Today, Stuart's research focuses on teachers and their working environment. He studies the social and political systems that affect teachers' professional lives. His goal is to contribute to important conversations about social inequality and the future of public education.
Stuart is also interested in teacher education, curriculum development and current educational issues.
