Stephen Blumenfeld

Dr. Stephen Blumenfeld has been a member of academic staff at Victoria University of Wellington since January 1999. Prior to joining the university, he held positions at the University of Illinois, Drake University, and Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Blumenfeld is a long-standing contributor to the Centre for Labour, Employment and Work (formerly the Industrial Relations Centre), where he served as Director from March 2009 to September 2022. In this role, he presented to employment relations practitioners on wages and conditions derived from the Centre’s collective agreements database during the annual Employment Agreement seminars held across New Zealand.

With over three decades of experience in employment relations and human resource management in a variety of international contexts, Dr. Blumenfeld possesses extensive knowledge and expertise in these fields. His research spans numerous aspects of these, both within New Zealand and internationally, and he has published widely on these topics. As an Associate Editor for Labour and Industry and a member of the Editorial Board of the New Zealand Journal of Employment Relations, as well as a periodic reviewer for several international journals, he is well-versed in a variety of research and evaluative methods, many of which he has applied in his own work.

While his primary teaching experience lies in employment relations, Dr. Blumenfeld has taught a diverse range of courses within management and organisation studies. These include labour economics, government regulation of business, international management, labour policy and employment law, human resource management, organisational behaviour, organisation theory, production and operations management, human resource management analytics, and quantitative research methods. Since January 2020, he has taught courses in negotiation and dispute resolution to both undergraduate and professionals, drawing on his professional experience as a negotiator.
