Stefan Hanß is Professor of Early Modern History at The University of Manchester. He has been awarded a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award and a Philip Leverhulme Prize in History in recognition of research achievements in material culture studies and global history. Hanß explores new interdisciplinary collaborations between the humanities and the sciences, and new methodological trajectories in material culture studies like digital microscopy, SEM microscopy, imaging, proteomics, remaking, and historians’ collaborations with artisans and artists. Hanß has authored numerous monographs and edited volumes, most recently, Narrating the Dragoman’s Self in the Veneto-Ottoman Balkans, c.1550–1650 (2023) and, together with Beatriz Marín-Aguilera, In-Between Textiles, 1400–1800 (2023). His research has been widely published, among others, in The American Historical Review, Current Anthropology, History Workshop Journal, Past and Present, Renaissance Quarterly, and The Historical Journal. Hanß is currently writing a monograph on the history of early modern hair.
