I am Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Communication at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University. My research is on language and social interaction. I am especially interested in institutional settings and workplace interaction, with recent output having dealt with such activities as service encounters, corporate business meetings, business workshop facilitation, guidance counselling in higher education, classroom interaction, healthcare, research-focused activities, theatre rehearsals, and forklift truck driving.

Most settings that I have studied have been international and linguistically dynamic, and I am especially interested in exploring the ways through which people make use of the body and other resources from the surround to facilitate communication, interaction and work activities. This preoccupation is informed by a personal interest in international settings, having also lived and worked in The Netherlands, France, Canada, Japan, Luxembourg and most recently Denmark.

I also have a professional background in theatre production, with work having been performed in some 20 countries.
